Chapter Five

“Dude, I already have my shots,” I said, stalling for time while I tried to think of anything I could do. I couldn’t cast my sun mage light because it would harm or even kill Justin as well as them. Then, a thought occurred to me as I held up the stake in a meager threat. “I won’t turn into a vampire or zombie.”

“Well, that’s all right,” Mill said. “My pet zombies are always looking for brains.”

“That’s clearly batty. What the fuck is with the brains thing?” I glanced at Justin, who nodded, despite being held by the collar. “I mean, what does a brainless shambler want with brains? I mean, it’s oxymoronic.”

“Look, kid, I appreciate what you’re doing, but it won’t work.” He took a step toward me.

“What am I doing?” I asked, mentally making sure my shield was strong enough to withstand a vampire assault.

“You’re trying to talk me out of this—and that just won’t work.” Mill approached me, still holding Justin. He touched my shield and it gave him a hard shock, causing him to let go of the fanger.

At that moment, all hell broke loose. Where Justin stood was now a big vampire bat—not the smaller ones Droid caught in his trap. Mill screamed as the bat flew right for his neck and sank his teeth into him. The bat changed to Justin and I stared in horror and fascination as Mill Hotter struggled and then succumbed to the fanger’s bite.

“Daddy!” Samantha screamed, flashing her set of sharpened canines. She charged at Justin as he fed. I ran to stop her and she turned on me, bursting through my shield that Mill had already weakened.

The force of her attack slammed the wooden stake I held into her chest. I was saddened to see such perfect breasts damaged, as Wesley or the Dread Pirate Roberts would say. She opened her mouth to take a bite, but I shoved the stake upward through her solar plexus and into her heart. She screamed, raking her claws down my face and drawing blood. Then, she collapsed in a heap. I stared at her in shock, having never killed anything sentient before. “I killed her,” I mumbled.

Suddenly Droid charged in, swinging—I kid you not—a mace. Blood splattered his clothes and dripped from the weapon. “Guys, you better hurry it up. We’ve got zombies after us.”

He stopped and stared at the carnage. Samantha twitched a few times at my feet and grew still; Mill collapsed in Justin’s arms as the fanger finished draining the CEO of Mile High Telecom. “Shit, Dude, did you just stake her?”

“Yeah, and Justin just drained Mill Hotter.” I winced as the scratch marks stung. I touched them gingerly and my hand came away with blood. “Shit, this means I’ve got to get a booster.”

“We’ve got to get these two outside now,” Justin said. “Otherwise, it’s a crime scene.”

I blinked. “It’s already a crime scene. How is bringing two bodies outside going to help?”

“Sun.” He tossed me a rag.
